When The Well Runs Dry
Scripture: 1 Kings 19
“There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
Devotional:
If you’ve ever walked into a rehearsal feeling hollow; confirmed your spot on the roster and immediately wished you hadn’t; or stared at a blank page willing a song to come that simply wouldn’t; you are in good company.
Discouragement finds all of us. It is not a sign that you are uncalled, uncommitted, or in the wrong place. It is simply the cost of showing up consistently, of serving faithfully for the long road. Inspiration is a beautiful gift, but its absence is not a verdict on your heart. It is an invitation.
Elijah knew this terrain well. In 1 Kings 19, we find one of the greatest prophets who ever lived utterly spent, exhausted, afraid, and unable to see a way forward. He had fixed his gaze on the failures and the opposition, and it had brought him to the end of himself. Sound familiar?
But watch what God does. He doesn’t rebuke Elijah. He doesn’t demand more. He invites him into presence.
And when Elijah arrives at the mountain, something unexpected happens. There is wind powerful enough to shatter rocks. There is earthquake. There is fire. But the Lord is not in any of them. After all the spectacle, after all the noise, God comes in a gentle whisper.
This is worth sitting with. We often pray for the earthquake. We expect God to show up in a way that shakes everything loose and makes the path unmistakably clear. But sometimes, perhaps more often than we realise, He meets us quietly. A still, small voice. A word that doesn’t thunder, but lands deep. Because His power has never depended on volume. It rests entirely in His word.
His whisper carries everything you need. Encouragement. Perspective. Life breathed back into tired places. Inspiration rekindled not by striving, but by stillness.
And 1 Kings 19 doesn’t end there. In His great kindness, God also knows that Elijah needs more than a moment, he needs a companion for the journey. So He leads him to Elisha. Not just a protégé, but also a friend. Someone to walk the long road alongside him.
God knows what we need when we reach the end of ourselves. He knows when we need the whisper, and He knows when we need a friend beside us.
So if the well feels dry right now, lean in and listen. And look around at who God may be placing in your path. The God who met Elijah in the wilderness is the same God who meets us in our discouragement today. He has not changed. He has not gone silent. He is right there, perhaps quietly, gently speaking, calling us back to His presence.
Prayer:
God, I don't always come to You with fire and earthquake in me. Sometimes I come tired. Sometimes I come quiet, unsure if You're even near.
Thank You that You don't wait for me to be loud to meet me. Thank You that You come close in the whisper, not just the wind.
Where I've been striving to hear You, teach me to listen instead. Where discouragement has made me question my calling, remind me it isn't a verdict, it's an invitation.
And if there's someone You want to place beside me for this road, open my eyes to see them.
I don't need the spectacle. I just need You. Speak, Lord. I'm listening.
Amen.
